Size and height of the build: Keep the highest point below 11 feet when it comes to property lines. With 6x6 posts every 8 feet, the beams can be 4x6 up to 8 feet long or 6x8 up to 12 feet long. After 16 inches for shingles and 24 inches for metal panels, make sure the rafters are spaced out evenly.

Posts and beams: 6x6 and 2x6 for the most part. For the hardware, you'll need Simpson H2.5 or H1 ties, structural screws, and 1/2-inch hot-dip galvanized bolts. Select 316 stainless steel fasteners for areas near the coast.

1. Mark and square the footprint, then set the post bases and lock them in place.
2. Install beams with 1/2-inch bolts and washers and plumber and secure the posts.
3. Put down the underlayment and roof, then the rafters, sheathing, or purlins.
4. Install conduit, put up fixtures, and test all circuits that are protected by GFCI.
5. After 48 hours, set the furniture down and seal the cut ends. You can also stain or paint it.
